Villa de Leyva in 2026

Ecotourism, Culture & Gastronomy

In the heart of the Cundiboyacense high plateau, overlooking the Zaquencipá Valley and the Eastern Cordillera, Villa de Leyva brings together mountains, páramos (high-altitude moorlands), Andean forests, semi-desert zones, and extraordinary cultural richness within a single territory. Located about 40 km from Tunja, this heritage town is far more than just its famous colonial square; it serves as a gateway to some of Boyacá’s most exceptional landscapes and experiences.

The Iguaque Fauna and Flora Sanctuary is one of the area's greatest treasures. Its páramos, high-Andean forests, and glacial lagoons harbor immense biodiversity and are vital to the region's water supply. Visitors can enjoy ecotourism activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and interpretive tours. The Bachué Trail leads to the sacred lagoon—a site linked to Muisca tradition as the birthplace of humanity.

The surrounding area offers even more to explore: the rock paintings of Sáchica, the hot springs of Alto Ricaurte, the waterfalls of La Periquera and Gachantivá, and the forests of Arcabuco, where birdwatching reveals yet another dimension of Andean biodiversity.

Yet, Villa de Leyva is also a place of history. Its cobblestone streets, churches, monasteries, and colonial mansions bear witness to centuries of transformation. It was here that Antonio Nariño—a precursor to the Independence movement—died, and where the First Congress of the United Provinces of New Granada convened in 1812.

The experience extends to the dining table, where traditional dishes like cocido boyacense, arepas, and local meats and produce sit alongside restaurants that reinterpret culinary traditions, as well as vineyards like Ain Karim and Guananí, which have cultivated a unique regional winemaking identity.

Traveling through Villa de Leyva is also a way to appreciate the land itself. Choosing local operators, walking responsibly, respecting ecosystems, consuming regional products, supporting communities, and protecting heritage helps build a form of tourism that not only visits these landscapes but also contributes to keeping them extraordinary.
